24 October 2004, Washington, D.C.-Friends of the National Museum of the United States Army (NMUSA) and the Pioneers in Education Alliance gathered in the nation's capitol to honor two of its own. Judson E. "Jeb" Bennett, Director of NMUSA, received the "[name]" award. Bennett in turn presented the first annual "Pioneers in Education" award to Truman Bell, Program Officer of the ExxonMobil Foundation.

The Pioneer's award will be presented annually to an individual who makes a significant contribution to the education of America's
youth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curricula. Bell was chosen to receive the award for his efforts in building a national science and engineering pipeline through outreach with SECME, Inc., an Alliance partner.

Three ExxonMobil scholars present at the Sunday evening reception took the opportunity to publicly thank Bell for his work. Bell and the scholars contributed much to the success of last summer's inaugural Pioneers in Education Student Leadership Academy, which is dedicated to preparing youth for the challenges of the 21st century workforce. On Monday, the Alliance partners-DuPont, NASA-SEMAA, NMUSA and SECME-and affiliates met to outline the 2005 program, and discuss strategies for expanding both the Alliance and the scope of its reach. Under the Alliance umbrella, NMUSA's Student Development and Mentoring Program (SDMP), coordinated by South Carolina State University, will send interns to the summer 2005 Leadership Academy to be held at North Carolina A&T University.

Bringing the weekend to a close, Mr. Bennett hosted a VIP tour of AUSA, the Association of the U.S. Army's 2004 Annual Meeting and Exposition held at the D.C. Convention Center. The next meeting of the Pioneers in Education Alliance will be held in December in Las Vegas and sponsored by Pioneer Hi-bred International, Inc., a DuPont company.
